You have 1 flag. YOu can click a flag to gain another flag.

Once having 20 flags, you can throw them away to get 2 flags each time you click.

Next itme when having 20, you can throw them away to gain 3 each click.

Then you have upgrades that cost even 9000 flags, and give big bonuses.
